Musical Fidelity X-series upgrades
My Musical Fidelity X-T100 amp had developed a couple of issues - interference on one of the speaker outputs and a sometimes unresponsive channel select button. I wanted to get the unit repaired and having spoken to John I decided that it made sense to go for an upgrade at the same time.
John had already upgraded my matching X-Ray v8 series cd player a while back with great results, therefore I had no doubts about going ahead with the amplifier too.
I have had the unit back a few weeks now and I have to say I am stunned at how good it sounds. It would be very easy to be sceptical or put upgrades down to how it sounds to the listener's ear. But honestly the upgrade has really transformed the sound quality. These units always sounded good, but when listening now it's like chalk and cheese. The overall sound stage and depth of sound makes it a real pleasure to listen to. You can hear every detail and follow each instrument / voice as if they have been separated out and are performing live. The sound is far less cluttered and can be enjoyed at any volume. I have really achieved what I wanted - a superb sending little setup at a relatively modest cost.
My advice if you're considering an upgrade... go for it, you will be impressed, the detail is amazing !
My thanks to John for his expertise.
My 30 year old Studio T power amplifier developed an intermittent fault which proved difficult to nail down. Although the amp played well most of the time, John identified some instability and recommended a partial rebuild, at a very reasonable price. That work has now been done and has cured the fault while also improving the sound quality. I'm happy to recommend JS Audio, and will be putting more work John's way when funds permit.
If you care to read any of the glowing testamonials please note these people are not exaggerating. I had my A308 amp upgraded in February and the results are spectacular, I'm not going to go into any detail, other testimonials will explain improvements more eloquently than I. I plan to have my A308 CD player upgraded by John soon
Bought a Meridian 557 mono on ebay, with a known fault was directed to contact John regarding a fix, having discussed the problem with John he advised a complete rebuild of the power amp due to both its age and the way the amps were built (to price, not longevity). When completed powered up and it sings beautifully. Great service and certainly great guy to have available.
I originally contacted John to repair the broken LEDs on the feet of my kW550 Amp, however he also sent me a comprehensive reply regarding the upgrade options. After reading the various testimonials I decided some 6 months later to take the plunge and go for the full upgrade.
I have to admit it felt like a gamble as individual opinions differ and when you can’t audition the finished product ahead of time you just never know. I decided to take my amp directly to John rather than putting it in the post and meeting John definitely eased my concerns. After a few minutes conversation it was obvious he knows his stuff so I returned 2 weeks later with great anticipation to collect.
John was quite insistant that it would take some time for the amp to produce its best and that it needed a long running in period. However, once I got it home the transformation was immediately obvious when playing the first track, and some 6 months later it has got better and better.
For me, the most impressive improvement is how natural my system now sounds. It’s just so much more life like and musical than before, even with CDs I had previously written off as poor quality. The sound staging and depth of presentation is immense that makes live recordings so realistic. The bass is much deeper and defined, this aspect has definitely matured as the amp has accumulated more hours. The higher frequencies are sweeter, cleaner and overall the sound is so much more detailed than before but like I say not at the detriment of being musical. It seems to excel with all types of music, solo vocals are 3 dimensional, the power and control of the amp (which is the reason I originally purchased a kW550) is so much stronger than before.
The upgrade is truely exceptional and a significant step change over anything I have done previously. It has rekindled my enthusiasm to spend more time listening and more importantly enjoying the music and not just listening to the hifi! If you have a kW550 and are thinking about upgrading, don’t hesitate.....you will honestly not be disappointed.
My system: Muscial Fidelity kW550, Wilson Bensch Discovery (speakers), Cairn Fog 3 (CD), Inspire Quest (turntable).
